Good morning!
I hope everybody is starting to feel good about their fitness as it is not too early to think about that impending fall marathon. I am certainly ready to amp up the training and this morning was the first of my 3 planned 18 mile trial runs. I have come up with the idea of making these as race specific as possible in terms of pacing. My idea is to take the first run about 15 to 20 seconds slower than planned race pace and lower it with each consecutive run until I get to planned race pace which should be right around 6:40 per mile. I knew today would be a struggle as I am coming off a 74 mile week and a 7 week average of 67 miles a week. But with perfect temps and a bright sunny morning, I was excited to give it a shot at a planned sub 2:06 18 miles.
I started the run this morning a little after 7:15am and the first mile went by at a comfortable 7:10 pace. From there, I pushed down into the 6:50s for a couple miles and then hit the hills. The largest hill is about 75 feet with a fairly steep grade. Not too much trouble and then back down the other side at a nice 6:40 pace. Even got up on my toes for a short bit. Fortunately, the miles seemed to go by relatively easily and I was soon heading home with the wind at my back. Miles 12 through 14 reflected that as they were in the mid 6:40s without too much of a push. I payed for my budding confidence that things were going well on miles 15
through 17, but still managed to stay in the low 6:50s. Mile 18 was a little quicker at 6:41as I got an adrenaline rush from such a beautiful morning and a successful 18 miler. Total time: 2:04:38 for 18 miles.
I've been more than a little disappointed with the fact that I haven't had a new PR in the marathon in almost 2 years. But I am bound and determined to do better in this next race. I am quite certain that there will be nobody at my level as a runner that trains any harder or puts more cognitive energy into achieving their goals. I also realize that I am pushing against the limitations I have physically and age wise as well. It should make for an interesting Toronto experience.
How are all of you doing with your running? Any takers yet on meeting me in Toronto for what I think is one of the better marathon venues for a fast time? Any advice for something I should be doing differently that is going to make a difference on race day? Am I just plain nuts? I'll answer that last one myself as it is undoubtedly YES!
Take care and as always RUN WELL AND WITH JOY IN YOUR HEART!

Nice run, I always find your reports inspiring because I am about a 7:15 miler for such distances so these reports always give me confidence that I too can crack 7 min miles if I put in the time and effort. Two questions: what is the temp on this run? It's been so hot where I am that it's really slowed me down. And 2, what do you eat before a run? What do you eat generally? Do you get most of your protein from fish? I've been trying to eat better lately, thinking about how it impacts my endurance. Thanks!
Nice run, and a good solid base. I'll be looking forward to your PR marathon this Fall.
Hi Mark
Thanks for the kind comments! If you happen to see this, I haven't been able to get to your blog. Could you enable the access, as I really enjoyed about your amazing results.
Truly one of the fastest masters runners I have ever known.
Thanks!
While I won't be taking on another marathon anytime soon (possibly ever), I'll come down to spectate and hope to meet you! Wow, it's 10 weeks already!
Great 18 miler!
Awesome run, bill! I'm always encouraged when I'm reading about your latest exploits.
Thanks for stopping by my digs today! I love hooking up with more runners from back home! Sounds like you have a great base and I'm sure you'll PR this next one for sure! I look forward to keeping tabs on you until then! Keep up the great running!
That is a strong workout. I am 15 weeks away from New York, and envy your pace and condition. One thing I have realized affects my running and heart rate as a I get older is better sleep and a rest day. The more sleep I get and taking a true rest day really help. Good luck, and look forward to reading about your training.
i know can you believe that fall is right around the corner?!?
your training is going AMAZING! you are going to have a wondeful fall marathon season :)
I keep telling you Bill... it's an impending spring half marathon! ;)
Nice 18 miler there. If you can edge that down to near race pace I can't see you not running a PB.
Only advice I can think of is to don't go out to fast, and make the first 20 miles feel as easy as possible.
Thanks for all the kind comments and advice! It is going to be a great fall of training and racing.
The Toronto Waterfront sounds like a beautiful run; I'd do it if I weren't already planning on Wineglass and hoping to BQ there.
Congratulations on a great run and your marathon PR time, are you trying to set a new one in Toronto?
I absolutely love your enthusiasm and your zest for running! Your training is going very well and I hope you'll get a PR in Toronto! Ana-Maria
I share your motivation and enthusiasm for a new marathon PR...I'm trying for one too this fall. My last one was last fall and Boston didn't do it for me this year...but I'll keep trying.
Sounds like you're off to a strong training start!
Meg
Nice run Bill! You're certainly on track and have a nice plan in place. Wow, only 10 wks!
Allow me to be a Devil's advocate if you don't mind...
or let's do some psychological reverse here...
(A) Do you think stressing yourself out with time or result will impede your ability to set a new PR
or
(B) Just wake up and say "What a beautiful day, let go and have a blast by doing a marathon today." and not even think about time.
Hmmm...I would say go with "B" and you may be in for a surprise. A new PR !
What do you think dude ? I am still amazed with your progress. You rock !!!
I'm always in such awe when I read your weekly numbers. Great job on the 18 miler! Fall is right around the corner (where does time go?)
WOW you are fast! Great run!
